Nothing Has Changed (stylized as Nothing has changed.) is a compilation album by English musician David Bowie, released in November 2014. It is the first to showcase Bowie’s entire career. The album includes the new composition “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime),” later being re-recorded for the 2016 album “Blackstar”. Nothing Has Changed’ is notable for including songs from Bowie’s unreleased 2001 album Toy: “Your Turn to Drive”, previously an internet-only single, and previously unreleased re-recorded versions of “Let Me Sleep Beside You” and “Shadow Man,” all of which are found on the triple CD version of the album.

The album was released in multiple formats: a triple CD version (sequenced in reverse chronological order), a double CD version (sequenced in chronological order), a double LP version, and a single CD version released exclusive to select countries.

The album’s title comes from a lyric from the song “Sunday” from Bowie’s 2002 album Heathen.

Nothing Has Changed is a bit of a cheeky title for a career retrospective from an artist who is known as a chameleon, and this triple-disc compilation has other tricks up its sleeve. Chief among these is sequencing the SuperDeluxe 59-track set in reverse chronological order, so it opens with the brand-new, jazz-inflected “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)” and concludes with David Bowie’s debut single, “Liza Jane.” On paper, this seems a bit like a stunt, but in actuality it’s a sly way to revisit and recontextualize a career that has been compiled many, many times before. Previously, there have been single discs, double discs, and triple-disc boxes, but the largest of these was Sound + Vision, a box released in 1989, and the most recent was 2002’s The Best of Bowie, which featured slightly different track listings in different territories but generally stopped in the late ’90s. The two-CD version of Nothing Has Changed resembles this 2002 set — there are absences, notably “John, I’m Only Dancing,” “Diamond Dogs,” and “TVC15,” but they’re not noticed among the parade of standards — but it’s easily overshadowed by the triple-disc SuperDeluxe set. This version of Nothing Has Changed touches upon nearly every phrase of Bowie’s career, bypassing Tin Machine but finding space for early pre-“Space Oddity” singles that often don’t make Bowie’s comps, and naturally it samples from his fine Y2K records, plus his 2013 comeback The Next Day. This expansiveness alone would be noteworthy, but when it’s combined with the reverse sequencing the compilation forces listeners to reconsider an artist whose legacy seemed so set in stone it appropriately was enshrined in museums. Obvious high-water marks are undersold — there’s not as much Ziggy as usual, nor as much Berlin — so other eras can also enter the canon, whether it’s the assured maturity of the new millennium or the appealing juvenilia of the ’60s. The end result is something unexpected: a compilation that makes us hear an artist we know well in a whole new way. ― Allmusic

In 1989, not all major artists had their catalog available on CD, and one of the most notable absences was David Bowie. When the format was in its infancy, RCA had issued several of his classics, but those pressings were notoriously awful and were pulled from the market in 1985 when Bowie acquired the rights to the recordings. Sharp businessman that he is, he took the catalog to market, and after an intense bidding war, he chose to reissue his classic work through Rykodisc, an independent CD-only label that had earned acclaim for its work with Frank Zappa’s catalog. Instead of dumping all the discs on the market at once, the titles were slowly rolled out, beginning with a series-encompassing Sound + Vision, a three-CD/one-CD-ROM box set released to great fanfare in the fall of 1989. At the time, box sets were all the rage, following the template of Bob Dylan’s Biograph — an exhaustive career overview that offered all the basics, peppered with some revealing rarities. Upon its release, Sound + Vision was reviewed as if it belonged to this tradition, when it really inverted the formula, offering a series, not career, overview by showcasing alternate versions and rarities, along with album tracks, with a few familiar hits tossed in here and there to provide context. This was a tantalizing way to begin a reissue campaign, and it did receive gushing reviews — the CD-era publication Rock & Roll Disc breathlessly claimed “Suffice to say that the sound quality will give your ears an orgasm” — but once the reissue series completed and once Ryko lost the rights to the catalog, Sound + Vision looked more like a curiosity, an artifact of its time, than a major statement.

Much of the problem stems from its design — it was intended to show off the sound quality, which was a marked improvement over the RCA discs, and to show the depth and breadth of rarities within the vaults. It was not a career-capper; it was a teaser. It was enticing upon its release, and some of it remains so. There’s a clutch of early rarities that lead off the set — the original demo of “Space Oddity,” alternate single versions of “The Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud” and “The Prettiest Star” — that are quite good, alternate takes on “John I’m Only Dancing” and “Rebel Rebel” that manage to be notably different without changing the feel, excellent outtakes from Diamond Dogs (a medley of “1984/Dodo”), Station to Station (a glittery, lush cover of Springsteen’s “It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City”), and Young Americans (the superb “After Today,” a disco-rock song that should have been on the album and is hands down the best rarity here). These suggested the great unearthed treasures that lay ahead, and they remain necessary additions to any serious Bowie collection, particularly because they never showed up on another disc. If they were placed in a better forum, they would function like the rarities on either Biograph or Eric Clapton’s Crossroads — rarities that helped fill in the details of an artist’s story — but since they’re in a set that’s intended to showcase what the Ryko series would do, not what Bowie had done, they’re the main attraction instead of feeding into the greater narrative. And that narrative, while certainly capturing the sometimes bewildering twists and turns in Bowie’s career, is an alternate-universe narrative, lacking defining songs, from “Starman” to “Golden Years,” and presenting many familiar songs in odd, not particularly interesting variations (a live 1974 version of “Suffragette City,” a German version of “Heroes,” presented in a 1989 remix). Though it succeeds in conveying Bowie’s ever-changing moods, it lacks the substance and sense of a great box set, which this surely could have been. Instead, it’s an interesting artifact of the early days of CDs, right down to its overly elaborate packaging, and only those who want to relive that time, or need those rarities, will need this in their collection. ― Allmusic

David Bowie has switched labels so often his catalog is cluttered with hits compilations, all purporting to be definitive. Since he is one of the few major artists with no compunction against putting all his hits on one disc, they’re all excellent, and 2002’s Best of Bowie is no exception, no matter which country you live in (brief explanation: sensitive to the needs of fans in different markets, Bowie and EMI/Virgin tailored a different Best of Bowie for every country it was released in — a collector’s and cataloger’s nightmare, but the basics apply for each variation). Yeah, there are great songs missing, and it loses a little focus toward the end, but all the big, big hits are here, in great sound and logical sequence. Bowie made more than his share of great albums, but if you just want the highlights, this is as good as Changesbowie in capturing them. ― Allmusic

Suzi Quatro is a performer as famous for her image as her music; Quatro was rock & roll’s prototypical Bad Girl, the woman in the leather jumpsuit with the enormous bass guitar (well, it looked enormous, given that Quatro is only five feet tall), looking sexy but ferocious as she banged out her glam rock hits in her ’70s glory days. Quatro is a woman who titled one of her albums Your Mamma Won’t Like Me for a reason. But there’s more to Suzi Quatro than all that, and she seems determined to show off the full range of her 50-year career in music on the box set The Girl from Detroit City. Quatro is a rocker but she’s also a showbiz lifer, and the music spread over these four discs is the work of someone up to do a little bit of everything, and along with Chapman/Chinn thunderboomers like “Can the Can,” “49 Crash,” and “Daytona Demon,” you also get vintage garage rock (three numbers from Quatro’s first band, the Pleasure Seekers, including the gloriously snotty “What a Way to Die”), easygoing pop numbers like “Stumblin’ In” (her hit duet with Chris Norman of Smokie), power ballads such as “Lonely Is the Hardest,” heartbroken numbers like “Heart of Stone,” country-inflected songs such as “Two Miles Out of Georgia,” an electro-processed dance version of “Wild Thing” (with Reg Presley of the Troggs as Suzi’s duet partner), show tunes (two songs from the British revival of Annie, Get Your Gun with Quatro as Annie Oakley), a tribute to Elvis Presley (“Singing with the Angels,” featuring James Burton and the Jordanaires), and even a hint of smooth jazz on “If You Can’t Give Me Love.” The Girl from Detroit City is sequenced so that the first three discs play like a writ-large “best-of” collection, while disc four is mostly devoted to rarities and unreleased material, including such puzzlers as a sexed-up cover of the Normal’s “Warm Leatherette” and a lushly melodramatic version of the Eagles’ “Desperado,” with Jeff Beck on guitar. This set’s desire to cover all the bases of Quatro’s life in music is its blessing and its curse; her most devoted fans will be thrilled with the eclectic track selection, but folks most interested in Suzi the Rocker will find themselves skipping through much of disc three and nearly all of disc four. (Those folks would be better served with EMI’s single-disc The Essential Suzi Quatro.) Still, The Girl from Detroit City certainly goes the extra mile to tell the Suzi Quatro story in all its complexity and detail, and Suzi offers plenty of her own thoughts on her life and career in the extensive liner notes and song-by-song commentary. ― Allmusic

David Bowie has never been shy about acknowledging his influences, and since the boho decadence and sexual ambiguity of the Velvet Underground’s music had a major impact on Bowie’s work, it was only fitting that as Ziggy Stardust mania was reaching its peak, Bowie would offer Lou Reed some much needed help with his career, which was stuck in neutral after his first solo album came and went. Musically, Reed’s work didn’t have too much in common with the sonic bombast of the glam scene, but at least it was a place where his eccentricities could find a comfortable home, and on Transformer Bowie and his right-hand man, Mick Ronson, crafted a new sound for Reed that was better fitting (and more commercially astute) than the ambivalent tone of his first solo album. Ronson adds some guitar raunch to “Vicious” and “Hangin’ Round” that’s a lot flashier than what Reed cranked out with the Velvets, but still honors Lou’s strengths in guitar-driven hard rock, while the imaginative arrangements Ronson cooked up for “Perfect Day,” “Walk on the Wild Side,” and “Goodnight Ladies” blend pop polish with musical thinking just as distinctive as Reed’s lyrical conceits. And while Reed occasionally overplays his hand in writing stuff he figured the glam kids wanted (“Make Up” and “I’m So Free” being the most obvious examples), “Perfect Day,” “Walk on the Wild Side,” and “New York Telephone Conversation” proved he could still write about the demimonde with both perception and respect. The sound and style of Transformer would in many ways define Reed’s career in the 1970s, and while it led him into a style that proved to be a dead end, you can’t deny that Bowie and Ronson gave their hero a new lease on life — and a solid album in the bargain. ― Allmusic

Evolving from the late-’60s art-rock movement, Roxy Music had a fascination with fashion, glamour, cinema, pop art, and the avant-garde, which separated the band from their contemporaries. Dressed in bizarre, stylish costumes, the group played a defiantly experimental variation of art rock which vacillated between avant-rock and sleek pop hooks. During the early ’70s, the group was driven by the creative tension between Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno, who each pulled the band in separate directions: Ferry had a fondness for American soul and Beatlesque art-pop, while Eno was intrigued by deconstructing rock with amateurish experimentalism inspired by the Velvet Underground. This incarnation of Roxy Music may have only recorded two albums, but it inspired a legion of imitators — not only the glam-rockers of the early ’70s, but art-rockers and new wave pop groups of the late ’70s. Following Eno’s departure, Roxy Music continued with its arty inclinations for a few albums before gradually working in elements of disco and soul. Within a few years, the group had developed a sophisticated, seductive soul-pop that relied on Ferry’s stylish crooning. By the early ’80s, the group had developed into a vehicle for Ferry, so it was no surprise that he disbanded the group at the height of its commercial success in the early ’80s to pursue a solo career. ― Allmusic

If you’re willing to count his work in such early regional bands as the Prime Movers and the Iguanas, Iggy Pop has been playing rock & roll for over 40 years as this compilation hits the stores — meaning there are guys in big-league rock bands who’ve spent years trying to be Iggy but weren’t even alive when the guy first started plugging into the Real O Mind. That, dear readers, is influence, and while the man has had more than his share of creative ups and downs over those four decades, one spin of A Million in Prizes: The Anthology tells you why Iggy has always mattered, and still does — he has never lost the ability to plug into the primal madness and furious belief that separates great rock & roll from ordinary stuff, and he can call up that near-demonic passion on a regular basis. While this isn’t the first career-inclusive Iggy compilation, A Million in Prizes is comprised of two full-loaded CDs, which gives it a scale and scope that bests its closest competition, 1996’s solid Nude & Rude: The Best of Iggy Pop, and it also gives full props to his work with the Stooges, featuring 11 songs from that band’s various incarnations (though whose idea was it to only include one track from the epochal Fun House? For shame!). As for the solo stuff, this set follows the bizarre roller-coaster ride from the gloomy self-reappraisal of his albums with David Bowie through his desperate efforts to find his own solo voice in the 1980s to his reemergence in the new millennium as an artist who can merge mind and muscle with equal force. While not every album is represented on A Million in Prizes, this offers an accurate and compelling look at the Iggy time line, and the mastering is strong, clear, and loud (especially on the earlier material, which has long merited aural refurbishing). The liner essays from Danny Fields and Lenny Kaye are excellent, and Iggy sums himself pretty well when he tells Fields, “I get up in the morning, I look in the mirror, and I think, ‘Hey, you’re a pretty interesting guy.'” That may well be rock’s greatest understatement, and while A Million in Prizes is hardly the final and definitive statement on Iggy Pop’s life and music, as an introduction and career overview it’s damn near unbeatable — at least until Iggy finally gets the box set treatment he so richly deserves. ― Allmusic

In 1972, Lou Reed was a minor cult hero to a handful of rock critics and left-of-center music fans who championed his former band, the Velvet Underground, but he was unknown to the mainstream music audience. By 1986, Reed was a rock & roll icon, widely hailed as a master songwriter and one of the founding fathers of punk, glam, noise rock, and any number of other vital rock subgenres; he even scored a few hits along the way. If you want to know what happened during those 14 years to make such a difference, the answer can be found in The RCA & Arista Album Collection, a 17-disc box set that brings together nearly all of Reed’s recorded work from this period. This set includes seven albums Reed cut for RCA Records from 1972 to 1975 (Lou Reed, Transformer, Berlin, Rock n’ Roll Animal, Sally Can’t Dance, Metal Machine Music, and Coney Island Baby), five he recorded while signed to Arista from 1976 to 1980 (Rock and Roll Heart, Street Hassle, Live: Take No Prisoners, The Bells, Growing Up in Public), and four more Reed made after re-signing to RCA in 1982 (The Blue Mask, Legendary Hearts, New Sensations, Mistrial). Despite the bulk of this set, it isn’t quite complete; two live albums are missing, 1975’s Lou Reed Live (outtakes from the shows recorded for Rock n’ Roll Animal that were released without Reed’s input) and 1984’s Live in Italy (a flawed but enjoyable concert recording with guitarist Robert Quine anchoring one of Reed’s best live bands). But this set beautifully charts the formative years of Reed’s solo career. The early RCA albums see him finding his feet, slipping into self-indulgence and decadence before making his way back to his strong suits. The Arista albums herald Reed’s return to strong, personal songwriting, even as he struggles with his demons and his ego. And a newly sober Lou returned to RCA to make some of his strongest and bravest music since leaving the VU (even if Mistrial ended that run on a stumble). Reed supervised the remastering of these albums for this release, and for the most part the sound is observably cleaner and more present, especially the LPs recorded using binaural sound, which have lost some of their murk. And the packaging is lovely; each CD is housed in a reproduction of its original vinyl jacket, and the hardcover book is full of rare photos, clippings, original liner notes, and interviews, including some candid conversations between Reed and Danny Fields. The RCA & Arista Album Collection doesn’t include any rare or unreleased material (and the bonus cuts that appeared on the previous CD releases of some of these albums aren’t here), but for serious fans who want to reacquaint themselves with Reed’s catalog of the ’70s and ’80s, it has rarely been presented with this degree of care, and there’s plenty of brilliant music to be found here. ― Allmusic

From 1972 to 1986, Lou Reed recorded for the RCA and Arista labels, where he made several strong solo albums as well as a few creative missteps, and while he became one of rock’s most respected songwriters, both labels seemed unsure of how to present Reed’s work to the public. In 1989, Reed signed with Sire Records, one of the most artist-friendly labels in the business, and with Sire Reed recorded some of his most ambitious and imaginative works, beginning with New York, a song cycle that earned him some of the best reviews of his solo career, giving his career a much-needed boost. The Sire Years: Complete Albums Box is a specially priced ten-disc box set that includes in full the eight albums Reed recorded during his tenure with Sire — 1989’s New York, 1990’s Songs for Drella (a collaboration with fellow Velvet Underground alumnus John Cale), 1992’s Magic and Loss, 1996’s Set the Twilight Reeling, 1998’s Perfect Night: Live in London, 2000’s Ecstasy, 2003’s The Raven, and 2004’s Animal Serenade.― Allmusic

Not the first posthumous compilation from David Bowie — that would be the lavish box Who Can I Be Now? (1974-1976), which was planned prior to his January 10, 2016 death — Legacy is nevertheless the first designed with his, well, legacy in mind. That much can be gleaned from the title of the compilation, but that’s a bit of a feint since this set essentially repackages the simplest incarnation of a previous Bowie hits compilation, 2014’s Nothing Has Changed. Legacy is available as a single and a double-disc, both carrying sequencings that mirror those on Nothing Has Changed (and both featuring a new mix of “Life on Mars?”). On the single disc, the first 12 songs are the same, then the back sequence is different, discarding “Absolute Beginners” and “Hallo Spaceboy” and concluding with “Where Are We Now?” and “Lazarus.” Similarly, the double-disc has a nearly identical sequencing on its first disc — “Ashes to Ashes” and “Fashion” are swapped — with the differences arriving in the comp’s final six songs, so Heathen’s “Everyone Says Hi” is here, and this concludes with “Lazarus” and “I Can’t Give Everything Away.” In both cases, the Legacy sequencing is slightly better than that on Nothing Has Changed, since it winds up ending on the elegiac note that Bowie gave Blackstar. Still, it’s splitting hairs: the 2016 and 2014 compilations are similar to each other, and they’re also similar to the many Bowie comps that came before, and they’re all just as likely to satisfy and pique interest. ― Allmusic

Borrowing heavily from Marc Bolan’s glam rock and the future shock of A Clockwork Orange, David Bowie reached back to the heavy rock of The Man Who Sold the World for The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Constructed as a loose concept album about an androgynous alien rock star named Ziggy Stardust, the story falls apart quickly, yet Bowie’s fractured, paranoid lyrics are evocative of a decadent, decaying future, and the music echoes an apocalyptic, nuclear dread. Fleshing out the off-kilter metallic mix with fatter guitars, genuine pop songs, string sections, keyboards, and a cinematic flourish, Ziggy Stardust is a glitzy array of riffs, hooks, melodrama, and style and the logical culmination of glam. Mick Ronson plays with a maverick flair that invigorates rockers like “Suffragette City,” “Moonage Daydream,” and “Hang Onto Yourself,” while “Lady Stardust,” “Five Years,” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” have a grand sense of staged drama previously unheard of in rock & roll. And that self-conscious sense of theater is part of the reason why Ziggy Stardust sounds so foreign. Bowie succeeds not in spite of his pretensions but because of them, and Ziggy Stardust — familiar in structure, but alien in performance — is the first time his vision and execution met in such a grand, sweeping fashion. ― Allmusic

Billion Dollar Babies is the sixth studio album by American rock band Alice Cooper, released in 1973. The album became the best selling Alice Cooper record at the time of its release, hit number one on the album charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and went on to be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album was well received by such critics as Robert Christgau, Greg Prato of AllMusic, and Jason Thompson of popmatters, but Rolling Stone gave the album only two and a half stars.

Songs were recorded in both the state of Connecticut and London, England. Lyrics cover topics and themes such as necrophilia, the fear of dentists, horror, and sexual harassment.
